The register plate is zinc or steel or fire resistant plaster board which you cut to size and install like a bookshelf into an alcove but with a hole cut through for the flue. It doesn`t have to be well done or sealed or any type of precision engineering,(think caveman rather than engineer) it is merely a draft excluder which you place on 4 metal L brackets. You`ll get the material for that out any builders yard. The purpose of the plate is to prevent heat loss up the chimney. The purpose of the plate is NOT to prevent soot falling down. If soot begins to fall down that is indicative you require your chimney swept.
